Out and About: The Top Ten Places You Can Take Your Dog

take your dogIt used to be fairly common to see a “no dogs allowed” sign posted at the entrance of most businesses. Fortunately, the pendulum is swinging the other way and now supports the full-blown cultural shift that not only allows dogs, but welcomes them. Lucky canines can now accompany owners in cafes, restaurants, hotels, retail shops, and even some workplaces. They’re embraced wholeheartedly, celebrated, and catered to at some of the greatest places you can now take your dog.

Not Just Stores for Pets

When large big-box pets stores began sweeping the nation, it was a kind of novelty to be able to bring your pet with you. Dogs seem to be relatively at ease in stores like Petsmart or PetCo, but the fun doesn’t end with shops peddling pet care supplies.

Know Before You Go

Prior to fastening Fido in the backseat of your rig, check beforehand to ensure the franchise or individual shop truly sticks to corporate mandates. It’s not unheard of for store managers to decide whether a canine-welcome policy is safe for patrons.

Also, while most dog owners enjoy their pup’s company while shopping, the ones that are properly socialized and trained are the ones with the most successful outings. Remember to leash up your dog, carry smaller breeds, and immediately clean up after any messes.

Take Your Dog Shopping!

Home Depot and Lowe’s are two big stores that welcome pooches, offer dog treats, and go above and beyond in customer service excellence. Sales associates are known to be very kind and accommodating to dogs and their owners and are great places to hem and haw over tools, plants, and appliances.

Not Too Fancy

It’s amazing to think that huge upscale names like Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, Bloomingdale’s, Banana Republic, and Pottery Barn actually welcome dogs – but they do! At stand-alone stores, coming and going with your dog will be easy, but if these shops are inside shopping malls, be sure to call ahead to confirm your dog won’t get you both kicked out.

Fill the Cart

Who doesn’t love a good stroll through Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Old Navy, or Michael’s? Find a bargain, get some art supplies, and head home with a satisfied dog in tow.

Specialty Shops

Bass Pro Shops, Barnes and Noble, Academy Sports, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Tractor Supply Co., Apple stores, LUSH Cosmetics (also cruelty-free!), and Starbucks are all pro-dog. In fact, the experience is usually so positive that they create an opportunity for your dog to become a regular customer.

Fun and Safe

Anytime you take your dog to a new place surrounded by unfamiliar sounds, smells, and strangers, you risk your dog’s safety (and maybe even his or her peace of mind). Always makes sure your dog is behaving normally. If he or she appears to be less than relaxed, take your dog out of the store as quickly as possible.

As with any public adventure, be sure your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date and his or her microchip information is accurate.
