VeterinarianThe grief that accompanies pet loss can be immense and difficult to bear. Whether your pet’s passing was unexpected or the inevitable result of a long life well lived, the fact remains that you must now learn to live with the void that has been left after the loss of your family member and friend.

At Schertz Animal Hospital, we know how difficult it can be to lose a pet. As pet owners and pet health professionals, we know the pain you’re experiencing and the loss you’re feeling. It is our humble honor to help you through the grieving process, however we can.

September 14 is National Pet Memorial Day. And we hope that you will join the nation in celebrating the lives of lost pets by celebrating and memorializing the life of your beloved pet. We know that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to grief, but we believe that taking the time to remember your pet and celebrate the life you shared together is an invaluable part of the healing process.

Here are a few ideas for memorializing your pet:

  • Send a card to someone else you know that has lost a pet this past year. You’ll both feel better for the kindness.
  • Take yourself on a walk with your pet’s memory. Follow a route your pet loved and remember the good times you shared together.
  • Create a collage or scrapbook of your favorite photos and souvenirs to look at when you’re feeling blue.
  • Volunteer at a local rescue group, or make a charitable donation in your pet’s name… and when you’re ready, return to this shelter to adopt your next pet.
  • Plant a memorial garden full of pet-friendly plants in your pet’s honor; be sure to keep a bowl of fresh water in the garden to help pets in need as they pass through.
  • Throw a dinner party with your (and your pet’s) best friends. Share favorite foods and favorite memories as you celebrate your pet’s life.
  • Schertz Animal Hospital also offers a number of online resources for pet owners who have experienced the loss of a pet and continue to grieve. Our pet loss library is available to provide articles written by grief experts and people like you who have experienced the traumatic event of losing a pet. The articles discuss a wide range of pet loss topics designed to provide comfort and reassurance during your time of grief.

Likewise, the Schertz Animal Hospital pet memorial wall is designed to help you memorialize and celebrate the life of your pet. Leave a note on the wall or make your own pet paw to express your love for your lost pet. Post a favorite picture of your pet in our pet picture gallery and keep the memory of your beloved companion alive forever.

Losing a beloved pet is a very difficult experience to undergo. Please, don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help in any way during this seemingly impossible time. We are here to help.
